Alan Smith was the final signing of the Jock Wallace era at Filbert Street in June 1982 and he combined with Gary Lineker to form a formidable strike partnership for City.

'Smudger' was the perfect foil for Lineker and his unselfish style of play set up many goals for his team-mate. He also seems to have adopted Lineker's values of sportsmanship having picked up only one booking in five seasons in a blue shirt.

After Lineker's departure he took up the challenge of leading the City line and in a total of 206 appearances for Leicester City he found the net on 84 occasions before his £800,000 move to Highbury in March 1987.
