Leicester City's reserve side overcame Stoke City 2-1 in the Pontin's Central League clash at the Marston's Stadium on Wednesday evening.

A long-range effort from Andy King early in the second half was enough to seal victory for the Foxes.

City had the ball in the net on four minutes, but Scott Garner was adjudged to have impeded Stoke goalkeeper Steve Ryan before bundling in Alan Sheehan's corner.

Dean McCormick had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead moments later, but the forward was unable to hit the target after connecting with Jon Parkin's low cross.

Matty Fryatt's curling shot produced a fingertip save from Ryan on fifteen minutes after James Chambers had set up the striker on the edge of the area.

The Foxes took the lead midway through the first half. Fryatt's perfectly weighted pass found Billy McKay who made no mistake in front of goal and slotted the ball past the onrushing keeper.

But Stoke were level within ten minutes. Vincent Pericard fought his way into the box before being brought down by Lathanial Rowe-Turner. Jon Parkin stepped up and converted the spot-kick to make it one apiece at the interval.

Andy King restored City's lead three minutes into the second half. The Potters failed to clear a cross and Ryan Beswick was able to tee the ball up for the midfielder who found the top corner of the goal from 25 yards.

Parkin came close to levelling for a second time on 50 minutes - his quick turn and shot inside the area produced a fine save from Paul Henderson, who parried the ball for a corner.

City continued to push forward in search of a third goal. A McKay header from a Sheehan free-kick dropped inches over the bar before a carbon copy strike from Andy King narrowly missed the target.

Substitute Jorrin John picked out an unmarked McKay at the far post five minutes from time, but the striker's volley failed to trouble the Stoke goalkeeper.

Gerry Taggart's side return to Pontin's League action when they travel to the Ricoh Arena to face Coventry City on Tuesday, 5 February.
