LCFC Women 2-1 Coventry City
The League's top two sides met in the Semi-Final of the League Cup and the game didn't disappoint. Early exchanges were even as both sides tried to get the upper hand.
The Foxes first chance fell to Courtney Sweetman-Kirk who fired over after Rachel Williams, who had just returned from injury after 4 weeks, headed into her path.
The Sky Blues came back when an in-swinging corner was dealt with neatly by centre back Jade Radburn. Further efforts by Sweetman-Kirk and Williams went begging, one of them by Sweetman-Kirk with only the Coventry keeper, Kerry Williamson, to beat, was blasted over from 5 yards out after a great delivered free-kick by Lauren Impey
City paid dearly for this as the Sky Blues broke into the City box, Radburn fouled their winger, a penalty was awarded and Kelly Anne Willis placed the spot kick wide of City's keeper, Laura Niblett.
The Foxes re-grouped and within minutes got the equaliser when Skipper Remi Allen, won a great tackle in midfield, sent forward Natasha Meade away, whose shot dipped and bounced over the Blues' keeper, Williamson. City definitely had the better of Coventry despite the score line first half and it was set up to be an interesting second half.
The second period started in the same vein with no quarters asked or given, and City kback 4 of Lekeisha Gumbs, Radburn, Impey and Caz Toone had to be on their toes to thwart the Coventry attacks.
The Foxes were getting to grips and were playing some delightful football with plenty of quick tempo passing which resulted in a penalty for City after Meade was pulled down, skipper Allen, stepped forward but the Sky Blues' keeper, Williamson, saved well.
Nat Reay on for Zira Handley on the right was paying dividends, a nicely chipped ball over the full back by Sweetman-Kirk who was in excellent form got Reay in but she was unlucky as her shot cannoned off the upright.
With the possibility of extra time looming, Allen got Reay away on the right, she out-paced the full back, crossed a fine delivery and Sweetman-Kirk ghosted in from the blind side of the Coventry defence with a great diving header to put the City into the final in May at Holmes Park, where they will meet their other arch rivals, Derby County. A fantastic game and City are for thte third season running on for the treble.
