Derby County 0-2 LCFC Women
City travelled to Derby in this Midland League encounter at Mickleover.
Nice build up play in the early exchanges by the Foxes, which involved Caz Toone. Remi Allen and Courtney Sweetman-Kirk but the chance went over. At the other end, County broke through but Nicole Nymoen tidied up at the back. Wing back, Toone, twice got Rachel Williams in but the keeper saved well on both occasions.
Derby came back at City and stout defending by centre backs, Lauren Impey and Lekeisha Gumbs, kept them at bay. Clever play by skipper, Allen, put Natasha Meade in but she shot weakly at the keeper. The first half continued in the same vain, with not many chances and most of the work being done in the midfield third.
The second period became a strong encounter and City found their goal touch when Gumbs played the ball from the back out-wide to winger, Zira Handley, on the right, who then cleverly pushed it to Meade who beat the County defender and laid it off to Williams who fired home.
The Foxes upped the tempo in this period with Handley, Sweetman-Kirk and Williams all going close.
The Rams came forward and City conceded a corner, the flag kick was a perfect delivery as their defender just headed wide of City's up-right unopposed.
Harriet Crofts and Nat Reay came on for City and Reay's first touch resulted in a rocket of a shot hitting the Derby cross-bar. City came forward again with the emerging skills of youngster, Nymoen, getting forward, who then found the industrious Allen whose shot was saved, but a sloppy clearance by the Ram's keeper found City's wing back, Toone, who was alert and found the elusive Sweetman-kirk who smashed it home to put the Foxes in the driving seat. The Rams were still fighting with a tremendous shot by the County forward but City's keeper, Laura Niblett, was equal to it with a fabulous save to deny them.
This was three hard earned points for City and shows that they have the belief to grind out results in their quest for the league title, with only Coventry to fend off in the league table, city's two point cushion could see them league champions if they win their next two games.
