Leicester City were left ruing their luck in front of goal as they had to settle for a goalless draw against Championship leaders Bristol City at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Foxes could and should have been out of sight with the hosts creating more than a dozen clear-cut scoring opportunities.

Iain Hume, DJ Campbell, new signing Kelvin Etuhu, Steve Howard, Lee Hendrie, Matty Fryatt, Joe Mattock and Matt Oakley also had great chances to break the deadlock but some lacklustre finishing and some excellent saves by Robins No.1 Adriano Basso frustrated Ian Holloway's men.

At the other end and most definitely against the run of play Brian Wilson hit the crossbar and Marvin Elliott found the post.

But despite City's incessant pressure, the spoils were shared.

Basso saved comfortably from Hendrie inside a minute then a great block from Gareth McAuley thwarted Darren Byfield at the other end.

Basso was called into action on two minutes when he parried Campbell's snap-shot before gathering at the second attempt.

Iain Hume thought he had opened the scoring on five minutes but his deflected volley found the side-netting, when the partisan crowd thought he had done even better.

From a second successive corner, Hendrie's in-swinger fell at the feet of Richard Stearman, but he was crowded out as he was about to pull the trigger.

At the other end, a brilliant save at Michael McIndoe's feet from Paul Henderson kept the scores level before McAuley turned Nick Carle's low drive behind for a corner in the eighth minute.

Three minutes later, Steve Howard headed over from Jamie Clapham's left-wing cross as the hosts continued to push forward in search of an early opener.

On 14 minutes Stearman just failed to meet Hendrie's deep free-kick to the back post before Hendrie fired wide after latching on to Clapham's throw-in.

New signing Kelvin Etuhu shot over the bar in the 22nd minute after racing on to Campbell's through ball.

Marvin Elliott shot over three minutes later before Etuhu's cross-cum-shot drifted on to the roof of the Robins net with Basso back-tracking.

Howard again saw his header from a Hendrie corner loop over the visitors' crossbar on the half-hour.

Hume should have handed the hosts the lead in the 36th minute but after collecting Campbell's pass inside the area, he drilled his shot wide from 12-yards with only Basso to beat.

Hume missed another gilt-edged chance to give the Foxes the lead moments later but after some great wing play by Etuhu, the Canadian international hit his first time effort over the bar with Basso beaten.

Stearman was booked for a foul in the 40th minute then Hendrie put his effort over a minute later.

Basso gathered under his own bar from Liam Fontaine's upward header two minutes before the break.

The home side wasted another glorious chance on the stroke of half-time when Hume's initial shot was parried by Basso, but with the goal gaping Etuhu somehow placed his shot agonisingly wide much to the fans' disbelief.

Therefore despite a lively first half from the home side, the game remained goalless at half-time.

The Foxes were the first to show after the break with Howard seeing his header cleared off the line from Hendrie's corner.

Hendrie was presented with another chance to open the scoring on 48 minutes when he met Campbell's knock-down but with only Basso to beat, he skewed his effort wide from only yards out.

The visitors made their first change in the 49th minute with Nick Carle making way for Ivan Sproule.

At the other end, the Foxes were handed a let off when Elliott's shot came back off the post, hit Bruno N'Gotty on the head and bounced in to Henderson's arms.

Matty Fryatt replaced Etuhu on the hour as the home side looked for that priceless opener.

The Robins made their second change on 62 minutes as Lee Trundle came on for Byfield.

The hosts were given an almighty let-off two minutes later when Brian Wilson's 35-yard screamer beat Henderson but cannoned off the underside of the bar and the Australian was on hand to pick up the pieces.

It was Fryatt's turn to shoot over in the 69th minute then a goalmouth scramble could still not see the home side put the ball in the net.

Campbell made way for Barry Hayles in the 75th minute while Hume was replaced by Joe Mattock.

Mattock then missed a chance at the far post from Hendrie's cross while Trundle's overhead kick flew aimlessly over the bar on 77 minutes.

Tamas Vasko came on for Lee Johnson a minute later then a brilliant Basso saved denied Howard then Oakley as the minutes ticked by.

Oakley was booked for a foul on Trundle in the dying moments before Henderson saved at his near post from Sproule.

Howard was again denied by the athleticism of Basso in stoppage time and the Foxes had to settle for a point at the final whistle.
