Leicester City's fight for survival will go down to the final afternoon of the season after they were defeated 3-1 against fellow relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Iain Hume third goal in as many games handed the home side an early advantage in front of the Championship's biggest crowd of the season.
In a game of twists and turns, Paul Henderson then saved Deon Burton's penalty after Barry Hayles had handled inside the box.
But Bartosz Slusarski's injury time equaliser at the end of the first half drew his side level.
Steve Watson helped his side come from behind on 53 minutes before it went from bad to worse for the Foxes when Hume missed from the spot 14 minutes later.
City tried to work their way back into the game and peppered the Wednesday defence but a second goal was not forthcoming and the visiting side sealed the game as a contest in the 89th minute when substitute Leon Clarke lobbed Henderson for the killer blow.
The hosts started in confident fashion and could have been ahead as early as the second minute had it not been for a smart save from Lee Grant.
After the Owls could only half clear a goalmouth scramble which saw Hume and Steve Howard see their efforts block, the ball broke kindly to Gareth McAuley, whose goal-bound effort was tipped around the post for the first corner of the game.
From the resulting flag-kick, Grant collected Barry Hayles' high ball into the box to avert the early danger.
However, the Owls keeper could do little to prevent the Foxes from taking the lead in the ninth minute.
A mistake inside the area from Captain Lee Bullen let in Hume and he did the rest, rounding Grant before rolling the ball into the empty net for the opener much to the sell-out crowd's delight.
Richard Wood could and maybe should have drawn his side level a minute later, but he somehow placed his header wide from Franck Songo'o's corner wide.
Matt Oakley saw his shot hit his own player Hayles on 14 minutes before an injured Patrick Kisnorbo left the field to a standing ovation in the 20th minute, with Bruno N'Gotty replacing him.Oakley took hold of the captain's armband.
Grant pushed away James Wesolowski's drive on 23 minutes before Richard Stearman saw his shot blocked a minute later after a surging run up the right flank.
At the other end, Paul Henderson comfortably gathered Bartosz Slusarski's header moments later.
The Foxes had the Australian shotstopper to thank on 29 minutes when he crucially saved Deon Burton's penalty after Hayles had been adjudged to have handled inside the box from Songo'o's corner. Hayles was booked as a result.
City almost took full advantage when Howard volleyed inches wide from David Bell's cross.
Richard Wood was booked for a foul on Oakley in the 32nd minute then Hume had appeals for a penalty turned down after going down under a challenge inside the area.
Mark Beevers and Hume again tangled in the area on 43 minutes but referee Chris Foy again awarded the visitors a free-kick.
And The Owls equalised on the stroke of half-time when Slusarski turned Bell inside the area before firing past Henderson for the equaliser.
That was to be the last action of the half as the two sides went into the break all-square.
The visitors made a change at the start of the second half with Jermaine Johnson replacing Bullen.
Wednesday created the first real chance of the second half when Slusarski was put clean through but Stearman did brilliantly to get back and crowd the striker out.
Hume headed wide from Bell's free-kick on 48 minutes before Howard put his shot agonisingly wide, but the referee's assistant had already raised his flag for offside.
The Owls then came from behind to take the lead in the 53rd minute when Steve Watson latched on to low cross from the right and drilled a shot past Henderson for his side's second of the game.
It was the Owls who were now in the ascendancy as Ben Sahar shot over the bar on 58 minutes.
Grant tipped McAuley's header over the bar on the hour before Hume put his penalty agonisingly wide in the 67th minute after the visitors had handled in the area.
Grant then saved N'Gotty's downward header on 69 minutes then Ronnie Wallwork came on for Songo'o four minutes later.
City made a double change in the 77th minute with Hume and Hayles making way for DJ Campbell and Matty Fryatt as the home side looked for a leveller.
Howard somehow put his shot wide when clean through a minute later.
Sahar made way for Leon Clarke seven minutes from time before Oakley fired high and wide on 85 minutes.
Grant was booked for time-wasting a minute later then Tommy Spurr was booked for a foul a minute later.
The Owls then sealed the contest a minute from time when Clarke beat the offside trap before lobbing Henderson for the clincher.
