Leicester City's five game unbeaten run came to end on Tuesday evening as they went down 1-0 to Sheffield United at the Walkers Stadium.
Danny Webber's 56th minute predatory strike from close range settled the contest despite the hosts' best efforts to get something out of the contest.
Matty Fryatt, Gareth McAuley and new recruit from Fulham Collins John came close for the Foxes but Webber's goal handed the Blades their first away Championship win of the campaign.
After a cagey opening five minutes, City created the first opening of the encounter when Alan Sheehan curled his effort from the edge of the area over the Blades bar.
Then following a neat passing move from left to right on nine minutes, Gareth McAuley tried his luck from 25-yards with a low drive but Paddy Kenny gathered the ball at the second attempt.
Matty Fryatt almost capitalised on former Fox Keith Gillespie's miss-kick two minutes later but as he attempted to cut back onto his right foot, Phil Bardsley slid in with a covering tackle to avert the danger.
It was all City at this point and McAuley headed wide from Sheehan's deep cross in the 13th minute.
The Northern Ireland international was then called into action at the other end when he blocked Webber's shot from the left hand angle and Marton Fulop gathered the loose ball.
The hosts were forced into a change on 18 minutes when injured club captain Stephen Clemence - with what looked like a recurrence of his calf injury - was replaced by Shaun Newton.
In the 26th minute Fulop turned Bardsley's long range effort around the post for a corner, which came to nothing.
A well-worked move involving Newton and Sheehan forced Gary Cahill to turn the Irishman's cross behind for a corner on 29 minutes before Fryatt curled his effort narrowly wide with Kenny beaten.
The home side were then forced into their second change on 32 minutes when Collins John, who joined on a three-month loan deal from Fulham this afternoon, replaced the injured DJ Campbell.
Richard Stearman was booked on 38 minutes after bringing down Michael Tonge before Ian Bennett came on for the injured Kenny, who failed to shake off a knock sustained minutes earlier after a collision with Cahill.
Replacement keeper Bennett spilt a cross from Sheehan in the 44th minute but managed to collect at the second attempt.
Due to the lengthy delays due to injuries, there were five minutes of stoppage time and City should have scored when Fryatt latched on to John's neat lay-off, but his curling shot beat Bennett but flew the wrong side of the right-hand upright.
It was then John's turn to fire wide after carving open a chance down the right hand side but despite the hosts' sustained pressure it remained goalless at half-time.
The Foxes had appeals for a penalty turned down at the start of the second period before Bardsley saw his shot saved by Fulop on 48 minutes.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 56th minute when Bardsley's low cross from the right was turned home from close range by Danny Webber for the opener.
City made their final change in the 61st minute with Levi Porter replacing Bruno N'Gotty as the home side looked for a leveller.
James Beattie beat Patrick Kisnorbo to the ball six minutes later but with Fulop advancing, the former Everton man put his effort over the bar with the goal gaping.
Cahill headed narrowly over from Gillespie's free-kick on 70 minutes before Sheehan was booked for taking his free-kick too quickly.
Gillespie made way for Jon Stead in the 82nd minute before Beattie had a goal ruled out for offside.
A last ditch block from Kisnorbo denied Luton Shelton two minutes later but it remained 1-0 to the visitors at the final whistle.
