Ian Holloway became the first Leicester City in more than 50 years to win his first league game in charge of the club against Bristol City on Saturday afternoon.

Goals from Richard Stearman and Matty Fryatt secured the Foxes the win at Ashton Gate - only their second Championship victory on their travels this term.

City were always in control of the encounter and could even have had more goals with Iain Hume and Collins John also coming close.

Fryatt was controversially sent off in stoppage time but the visitors were still delighted with all three points especially their new boss only 48 hours after taking over the reins at the Walkers Stadium.

The hosts came within inches of opening the scoring inside four minutes.

Lee Trundle picked up possession on the edge of the area before pulling the ball back on to his right foot and curling an effort which beat Marton Fulop but thankfully for the visitors dropped on to the roof of the net.

The Foxes had appeals for a penalty turned down by referee Jonathan Moss on seven minutes when Matty Fryatt went down under a challenge from Cole Skuse inside the area.

Alan Sheehan saw his low drive blocked by Jamie McCombe in the 10th minute.

Fulop got down well to push away McCombe's downward header two minutes later before Adriano Basso saved Collins John's shot after he had latched on to Fryatt's square pass in the 13th minute.

Moments later, Gareth McAuley picked up the game's first yellow card then Brian Wilson followed suit on 16 minutes for a foul on Joe Mattock down the left flank.

Fulop was again called in to action on 18 minutes when he tipped Darren Byfield's shot around the post for a corner but from the resulting flag-kick, the Hungarian international easily gathered Lee Johnson's cross-cum-shot.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Sheehan's deep in-swinging free-kick from the right fell to the advancing Stearman and after his initial header was blocked, he stabbed the rebound home from close range past Basso for the opener.

Before the re-start, Trundle was booked for an off-the-ball incident.

The injured John made way for Darren Kenton on 34 minutes then Fryatt saw his shot saved by Basso five minutes later after cutting inside from the left.

Fryatt's cross from the left proved too strong for the advancing Stearman in first half stoppage time and it remained 1-0 to the visitors at half-time.

The visitors were handed a let-off at the start of the second half when Wilson's goal-bound shot was blocked by his own player Byfield on 47 minutes.

The injured Skuse was replaced by Ivan Sproule in the 50th minute before Marvin Elliott's effort was deflected behind soon afterwards.

Byfield shot wide in the 55th minute then Kenton did well to head the ball clear under pressure from Michael McIndoe three minutes later.

Iain Hume should have done better with Fryatt's cross on the hour but his first touch let him down and the ball rang out for a goal-kick.

Fulop saved from Trundle on 62 minutes then Enoch Showunmi replaced the former Swansea striker moments later.

Basso gathered the ball at the second attempt under pressure from Fryatt in the 65th minute.

The Foxes should have doubled their lead two minutes later when Sheehan's low drive was only parried by Basso but Hume could not keep his follow-up shot down and it looped over the bar.

Stearman shot straight at Basso following James Wesolowski's fine run and cross on 70 minutes.

Fryatt tried his luck from long range but Basso saved comfortably in the 75th minute.

Wilson made way for David Noble on 76 minutes as the home side looked for a way back into the game.

But the visitors sealed the victory in the 77th minute when Fryatt received the ball from Hume inside the six-yard box and slotted it in off the post for the clincher.

Hume made way for Bruno N'Gotty on 81 minutes then Liam Fontaine's last ditch tackle denied Fryatt late on.

Fryatt was dismissed in injury time then Noble was booked but it was City who were celebrating at the final whistle.
