Andy King's first goal for the club was not enough to prevent Leicester City from sliding to a 2-1 defeat at home to Southampton at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The 19-year-old's spectacular effort on the stroke of half-time cancelled out Stern John's 32nd minute opener.

But Andrew Surman's penalty after the break condemned Ian Holloway to his first defeat as Foxes boss.

Jonathan Hayes picked out the returning Carl Cort as early as the fourth minute but referee Richard Beeby penalised the striker for an apparent push.

The hosts should have opened the scoring on five minutes but after latching on to Gareth McAuley's header forward Iain Hume, under pressure from Andrew Davies, saw his shot saved by Kelvin Davies before Shaun Newton side-footed the rebound just over from 18-yards.

A minute later, Cort just failed to connect with Hayes' teasing cross from the left.

At the other end, Jason Euell saw his shot charged down by Andy King on 10 minutes.

Surman capitalised on a rare McAuley mistake three minutes later but Marton Fulop raced off his line to clear the danger.

Alan Sheehan shot over from 30-yards in the 15th minute then Stern John had a goal disallowed for offside a minute later.

Richard Stearman headed over from another Sheehan's free-kick on 19 minutes then Patrick Kisnorbo followed suit soon after.

Hayes shot wide in the 29th minute after Cort's knock-down but it was the visitors who took the lead on 32 minutes.

Nathan Dyer headed the ball back into the path of John and he made no mistake from six-yards, smashing the ball home past Fulop for the opener.

Davis saved well from Stearman in the 35th minute then Stephen Clemence let fly from 30-yards out just before the interval, but his effort failed to test Davis.

Kisnorbo dragged his shot wide in stoppage time after Davis failed to collect Newton's corner but the hosts equalised with literally the last kick of the first period.

King picked the ball up 35-yards from goal and curled a sweet right-foot shot past Davis and into the top right-hand corner for the leveller.

From the re-start, the referee immediately blew his whistle for half-time.

Cort had a goal disallowed for offside on 47 minutes before Fulop got down well to deny Dyer moments later.

Cort headed narrowly wide in the 49th minute after connecting with Sheehan's free-kick then Clemence did likewise after a fine run and cross by Hume.

However, the Saints restored their advantage on 55 minutes when Surman fired home from the penalty spot after Clemence had been penalised for handball inside the area.

Fulop got down well to thwart Bradley Wright-Phillips on the hour then Ashley Chambers replaced Newton moments later.

Davis saved from Hume two minutes later before 17-year-old Reneil Sappleton came on for his debut in place of Cort on 66 minutes.

Phil Ifil was booked for a foul on Hayes in the 75th minute then Kisnorbo headed wide from Sheehan's corner.

Davis tipped Clemence's long range effort around the post on 80 minutes.

Stearman was booked for a foul on Dyer three minutes later and Adam Hammill replaced the winger in the 85th minute.

Hayes made way for Bruno N'Gotty late on with Kisnorbo moving up front for the final few minutes of the contest.

Chambers came close on 89 minutes but Davis was on hand to clear the danger.

Fulop gathered comfortably from a Euell shot in injury time but the visitors had done enough to hang on for three points.
