DJ Campbell's first goal in a Leicester shirt and a late Patrick Kisnorbo header earned the Foxes a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
However, it could have been even better for the visitors who conceded a second goal with almost the last-kick of the game when Clinton Morrison tapped home from close range.
Campbell pounced on 63 minutes before Kisnorbo, making his first start of the campaign following a two-match suspension, headed home three minutes from time to help the visitors pick up their first point of the Championship campaign under new boss Martin Allen.
After Stuart Green had handed the Eagles a first-half advantage, City upped their game after the break with new signing Clive Clarke and James Wesolowski also coming close.
But with City moments away from a crucial triumph, Morrison struck a killer blow to earn his side a share of the points.
The visitors made a positive start with Shaun Newton being crowded out inside the area before Bruno N'Gotty's deep cross proved just too long for Campbell.
New signing Marton Fulop was called into action as early as the fourth minute when he got up well to collect former Fox James Scowcroft's hanging cross from the left flank.
At the other end, Julian Speroni saved at his near post from club captain Stephen Clemence in the seventh minute.
Tuesday night's match-winner Wesolowski tried his luck from 20-yards moments later but his effort went the wrong side of the left-hand upright.
After good work by the advancing Campbell, Clemence saw his piledriver blocked by Leon Cort on 16 minutes.
Alan Sheehan headed wide from Newton's cross two minutes later before Clinton Morrison miss-kicked when clean through in the 26th minute but the assistant referee's raised flag spared his blushes.
The returning Patrick Kisnorbo was booked for a pull on Morrison on 31 minutes on the edge of the area and from the resulting free-kick Green drove his effort through the Foxes wall and past an unsighted Fulop for the opener.
Sheehan saw his free-kick blocked by the Palace wall following the re-start.
Fulop kept his side in the game in the 39th minute when he produced a magnificent one-handed reaction save to deny Matt Lawrence.
And it remained 1-0 at the break, leaving City with it all to do in the second half.
Danny Butterfield replaced Jose Fonte at the start of the second half while Mark de Vries made way for Iain Hume.
The Foxes carved out the first opportunity of the second period when Newton did well down the right side, before pulling the ball back to an unmarked Clive Clarke.
But the Irishman failed to test Speroni with his half-volley from the left-hand angle going over the bar.
City made their second change on 55 minutes as Sheehan made way for Levi Porter.
Speroni kept his side ahead three minutes later when he tipped Wesolowski's deflected shot, off Scowcroft, behind for a corner, which came to nothing.
However, the visitors did equalise in the 63rd minute when Kisnorbo's bullet header from Clemence's inswinging corner was only partially saved by Speroni and Campbell was on hand to poke the ball into the back of the net for a fully deserved equaliser.
Mark Kennedy headed straight at Fulop on 70 minutes when it seemed easier to score.
Palace made a double change moments later with Dougie Freedman and Shefki Kuqi replacing Kennedy and goalscorer Green.
Clemence was cautioned for a foul in the 72nd minute before Freedman put his free-kick well over the bar on 78 minutes.
James Chambers replaced Newton in the 82nd minute then Mark Hudson side-footed the ball into Fulop's hands after the Hungarian had misjudged a cross from the right.
However, the visitors looked to have secured three points three minutes from time when Kisnorbo rose unchallenged to head home's Clemence corner for his side's second and a possible clincher.
However, the hosts had other ideas and Morrison's stoppage time tap-in following Freedman's blocked free-kick cut the Foxes' celebrations short and ensured the Eagles a fortunate draw.
